About This Journey
Manas National Park in Assam is a double UNESCO-listed treasure — a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve straddling the Bhutan border along the swift Manas River. The park is famous for the golden langur and pygmy hog, two of India's rarest mammals found almost exclusively here. Tigers, one-horned rhinos, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, clouded leopards, and elephants make Manas one of India's most biodiverse parks. River rafting on the Manas River, where the Bhutan royal hills are visible across the water, is an unforgettable experience. Nearby Kaziranga National Park (4.5 hrs) pairs perfectly for a multi-park Assam safari. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary (2.5 hrs) adds the world's highest rhino density in a compact area. The gateway town of Barpeta Road connects to Guwahati (3 hrs). Best visited November to April.

Must Visit Spots

Manas is the last stronghold of the pygmy hog, the world's smallest wild pig, and home to the golden langur, a primate found only in this Bhutan-India border region.

The Manas River, fed by Himalayan glaciers and flowing along the Bhutan border, offers thrilling rafting experiences with forest-lined banks and incredible birdlife.

Manas holds one of the last viable populations of the highly endangered wild water buffalo, a massive and impressive bovid that roams the park's grasslands.

Manas's status as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site reflects its exceptional biodiversity, trans-boundary ecosystem value, and outstanding natural beauty.
