About This Journey
Meghalaya, the "abode of clouds," is a land of waterfalls, sacred groves, and villages built around living tree-root bridges. The journey begins in Guwahati on the banks of the Brahmaputra, climbs into the pine-covered hills of Shillong, and continues through the waterfall country of Jowai. From there, the route reaches Mawlynnong — Asia's cleanest village — and the crystal-clear waters of Dawki, before ending in Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth and home to Meghalaya's most dramatic canyons, caves, and cascades.

The gateway to Meghalaya, Guwahati sits on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River. Its centerpiece is the Kamakhya Temple, one of the most powerful Shakti Peeth shrines in India, perched atop Nilachal Hill. A sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra is a popular way to see the city, and a short ferry ride leads to Umananda Island, home to a small river-island temple and said to be one of the smallest inhabited river islands in the world. The city also serves as the cultural and commercial heart of Northeast India, blending centuries-old traditions with modern urban life. Visitors can explore vibrant local markets, savour authentic Assamese cuisine.

Known as the 'Scotland of the East,' Shillong is Meghalaya's capital and cultural hub. Umiam Lake, a vast reservoir surrounded by pine forests, is ideal for boating and water sports. In the city itself, Elephant Falls cascades down in three tiers, while Ward's Lake offers a peaceful boardwalk stroll and Lady Hydari Park is popular for its gardens and mini zoo. The Don Bosco Museum offers panoramic views of the city from its rooftop deck, and Tagore's House commemorates the poet Rabindranath Tagore's stay in Shillong, now preserved as a heritage museum.

The headquarters of the Jaintia Hills, Jowai is known for its striking turquoise waterfalls. Krang Suri Falls, with its vivid blue-green pool, is the region's most photographed spot and popular for swimming. Phe Phe Falls offers a dramatic multi-tiered drop into a forested gorge, while Tyrshi Falls remains a quieter, lesser-visited cascade. The area is also home to a historic stone bridge, a natural rock formation used by locals for generations to cross the river. Surrounded by rolling hills and lush countryside, Jowai offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers and photographers alike. The town also provides a glimpse into the rich traditions of the Pnar community, with vibrant festivals, local markets, and a warm cultural heritage that reflects the spirit of Meghalaya.

This region combines Meghalaya's cleanest village with its clearest river. Along the way, the Laitlum viewpoint offers a dramatic cliff-edge panorama over the Khasi Hills. Shnongpdeng, on the banks of the Umngot River, is known for having some of the cleanest water in the world, so transparent that boats appear to float in mid-air. Nearby Dawki is the main hub for river crossings and boating on the Umngot. The Umkrem and Borhill Falls add scenic stops en route, before reaching Mawlynnong, officially recognized as Asia's cleanest village, home to a living Single Decker Root Bridge, a naturally-formed Balancing Rock, a treetop Skywalk with valley views, the century-old Church of the Epiphany, and traditional bamboo treehouses used as village viewpoints.
