About This Journey
Simlipal National Park in Odisha is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of India's most extraordinary — and least visited — tiger reserves. It is home to the world's only known wild population of melanistic black tigers, a colour morph unique to Simlipal. The park's landscape of twin waterfalls — Barehipani (399 m) and Joranda (150 m) — dense sal and bamboo forests, and an orchid sanctuary with over 90 species make it visually unlike any other Indian reserve. Gaur, elephants, leopards, wild dogs, and giant squirrels complete the wildlife roster. Nearby Bhitarkanika National Park (3 hrs) protects the world's second-largest saltwater crocodile population and spectacular mangroves. The Devakund Waterfall and tribal villages of the Santal and Ho communities offer cultural depth. Gateway city Baripada connects to Bhubaneswar (3 hrs). Best visited November to May.

Must Visit Spots

One of India's highest waterfalls at over 400 metres, Barehipani is a breathtaking cascade set deep inside Simlipal's forest and reachable on guided safari drives.

Simlipal is one of the only places in the world where melanistic tigers with dark striping have been photographically recorded, making it a pilgrimage for wildlife photographers.

Simlipal hosts a dedicated orchid sanctuary with dozens of wild orchid species thriving in its moist sal forests, a rare botanical attraction within an Indian tiger reserve.

As a designated elephant reserve, Simlipal supports large elephant populations that roam freely across its forests and grassland meadows.
