Bali: Temples, Terraces & the Island That Gets Under Your Skin

Ancient Hindu temples on volcanic clifftops, emerald rice terraces at dawn, surf beaches, and the Nusa Islands' turquoise waters β€” Bali remains Southeast Asia's most bewitching destination.

Bali has been described so often and in such rapturous terms that the real risk is arriving with expectations too high to meet. And then you pull into Ubud before dawn and watch the mist rise above the rice terraces, or you stand at Tanah Lot as the tide comes in around the sea temple, and it all makes sense. Bali earns its reputation every single day.

Ubud β€” The Cultural Heart of Bali

Ubud is where Bali's artistic and spiritual identity is most concentrated. The Monkey Forest at the southern end of town is a 12-hectare sanctuary of temples and Balinese long-tailed macaques β€” chaotic, entertaining, and oddly meditative. The Tegallalang Rice Terraces north of town, cascading down the hillside in interlocking green shelves, are most beautiful in the early morning before the selfie poles arrive. The traditional Kecak Fire Dance performed at Pura Uluwatu at sunset is one of the great theatrical experiences in Asia.

Pro Tip: The Mount Batur sunrise trek (3am start, 2-hour climb) delivers a caldera view at dawn that is among the finest in Southeast Asia. Book through a registered trekking operator in Ubud β€” the trail requires a local guide, and the summit at sunrise is worth every pre-dawn alarm.

Tanah Lot & Uluwatu β€” Temple Drama at Its Peak

Tanah Lot, the sea temple perched on a rock formation surrounded by tidal ocean, is Bali's most photographed sight β€” and it is not overhyped. The temple is inaccessible at high tide, which only enhances its drama. Visit at sunset and the silhouette against an orange sky is extraordinary. Uluwatu on the Bukit Peninsula is built directly into a 70-metre limestone cliff above crashing surf β€” the combination of temple architecture and natural setting is one of the most dramatic in the world.

Nusa Islands β€” Where the Real Blue Water Begins

A 45-minute fast boat from Sanur brings you to Nusa Penida β€” Bali's most dramatic offshore island. Kelingking Beach, the T-Rex-shaped clifftop viewpoint with turquoise water below, has become one of Indonesia's most iconic images and the real thing does not disappoint. Crystal Bay offers manta ray snorkelling, and Atuh Beach in the east is as close to an undiscovered paradise as you can find while still being reachable in a day. Allow two nights minimum.

Seminyak, Canggu & the Beach Club Scene

Southern Bali's beach towns each have a distinct character. Seminyak is upscale β€” designer boutiques, fine dining, and sunset cocktails at Ku De Ta. Canggu is younger and more creative β€” digital nomad cafΓ©s, organic food, and the Old Man's beach bar at sunset. Kuta is for the pure beach-and-surf crowd. All are close enough to visit across a single southern Bali base without moving accommodation. The surf along the Bukit Peninsula β€” Padang Padang, Uluwatu, Bingin β€” is world-class for intermediate and advanced surfers.
